There’s something about a diamond tiara that ignites a flurry of excitement inside even the most staunchly indifferent. Whether it’s the princess connotations or memories of a childhood dressing-up box, it’s almost impossible to place a tiara on a woman’s (or, indeed, a man’s) head without eliciting a grin.

So it was with glee that Parisian jewellery maison Chaumet unveiled an entire wall of tiaras within its new, temporary boutique in Saint-Germain-des-Prés during Paris Haute Couture week.

The brand has relocated while its Place Vendôme headquarters undergo refurbishment, and the pop-up’s inaugural event was the launch of the latest installment in Chaumet’s long-running Joséphine collection….

For us it’s a no-brainer. However some Disney fanatics won’t entertain the thought of staying in a non-Disney hotel.

EVANSTON, Ill. — It was minus 15 degrees here on Wednesday afternoon, near the epicenter of the polar vortex, and school had been canceled for much of the week.

“How are we going to survive?” one mother asked on a text thread Tuesday night. My phone pinged at 9 a.m. Wednesday with a plaintive message from someone else: “We’ve already gone through my two craft projects, painted and watched an hour of TV.”

At times like these, modern parents turn to Google and YouTube and Pinterest, which beckon with seemingly simple and fun science experiments for frigid temperatures.

But as my 7-year-old son, Gus, and his friend Eren, 8, learned on Wednesday when we tested a handful of popular cold-weather experiments, science doesn’t always follow the neat path of a viral video.

Several videos demonstrate how to super-chill soda. A similar experiment instantly freezes water.

We shook up two one-liter bottles of Sprite and placed them outside of our front door, where my phone told me it was minus 15 degrees Fahrenheit. We also put a small bottle of spring water alongside them to test the instant-ice trick.

The idea was to try to cool the soda and the water below their freezing point without turning them solid. Without the impurities found in tap water, there is nothing to start the nucleation process that causes water to freeze, delivering a supercooled liquid that, once jostled or disturbed, will instantly turn to a slushy ice.

But two hours later, the bottles outside our house were already halfway solid. Eren, Gus and my 3-year-old daughter, Hildy, didn’t seem to care as they slurped down cups of the stuff.

“What did we learn today?” my husband, Alex, said. “The internet is broken.”

Olivia Castellini, a senior exhibit developer at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago, offered several other possible explanations. Our spring water might not have been pure enough, and we may have waited too long. Next time, she recommended timing how long it took to freeze one bottle, then putting out another bottle and returning about 15 minutes earlier to catch the liquid at exactly the moment. “You have to find just the right amount of time to super cool it,” Dr. Castellini said.

This experiment is designed to show how the volume of a gas expands as it warms, and contracts as it cools. The method: Blow up balloons in warm air, then expose them to cold air and they will deflate. They will reinflate when you return them to warm air.

This is the same reason car tires deflate in cold weather, said Michael Kennedy, a research professor and director of Northwestern University’s Science in Society, a science education center.

We inflated half a dozen balloons inside, then bundled up and went outside to wait for them to shrink in the minus 39 degree windchill. And we waited. Gus and Eren decided to bury their balloons in a snow bank. Hildy’s flew into the street.

When we could no longer feel our noses, we put the remaining balloons in a bag, tied it to the door handle, and rushed inside. After about 45 minutes, the balloons had deflated only slightly and we realized we hadn’t been very scientific: It might have wise to first measure the balloons’ original circumference, for example.

Once back inside, the balloons did return to their previous shape, but by this time only the adults cared. The child scientists wanted more Sprite slushies.

Dr. Castellini recommended tying a string around the balloons, placing them outside, in a window, where you can watch them from the comfort of your home. When the string falls off, they’ve shrunk.

Of all the cold-weather experiments, the one I was most looking forward to was the frozen-bubble trick. The online videos are magical, demonstrating how a normally ethereal soap bubble hardens into a lacy globe when the temperature is just right.

We tried two versions of bubble wands — a more traditional wand with a small, round opening, and a large, oblong variety designed for bigger bubbles.

Once outside, both wands created perfect bubbles, but it was hard to get a look at them because the wind whipped them down the street. Still, it was fun to watch them pop as they flew out of the wands, leaving frozen skins that dropped to the ground. If we waited too long, the bubble solution froze in the wand, creating a translucent pane that we could poke with our fingers.

Bubbles, Dr. Castellini said, are really a “water and soap sandwich,” with soap encasing a layer of water. In warmer weather, the air inside the bubble expands as it warms, popping the bubble before it gets far. But in cold weather, the water sandwiched inside the soap has a chance to freeze before the bubble pops.

Dr. Kennedy suggested experimenting with different solutions to create the longest-lasting bubbles. Many people add glycerin, which gives the bubble strength, he said.

This trick resurfaces during nearly every cold snap, along with the inevitable safety warnings (to riff off Jim Croce, don’t throw it into the wind).

“The cool thing about water is that it can exist in liquid, solid and gas states all at the same time,” Dr. Castellini said. By throwing boiling water into frigid air, she said, “you’re manipulating that transition.” Because cold air can’t absorb water the way warm air can, the water that is thrown has to go somewhere — so it freezes in tiny droplets and falls to the ground in a dramatic cloud.

The experiment works best with extremely cold air, and we certainly had that on Wednesday. We repeated the experiment four times — throwing about a half of a cup of boiling water out of a steel travel mug — and each time, the water dissipated in a billowing puff of ice crystals.

Given the demand for Sprite slushies, I had saved our other sugar-laden experiment for last.

Several websites describe a simple recipe for maple syrup taffy. Pack snow into a pan and place it in the freezer. Heat maple syrup to about 240 degrees Fahrenheit, checking with a candy thermometer. Pour the syrup over the snow, where it will harden into a chewy taffy.

Our syrup boiled over when it reached about 220 degrees, preventing us from heating it to the right temperature. By now, the children had ripped their blankets from their beds, fashioned them into capes, and were begging for iPad time. I poured the syrup over the snow, and the hot liquid turned everything into a slushy mess. No taffy in sight.

Use a larger pot next time, our science consultants suggested, and cook the syrup more slowly.

There’s still time to try again, I suppose. The high on Thursday is expected to be just slightly warmer, at minus 1 degree, and school is still canceled.

Not all experiments turn out as planned.

“But that’s really the fun of science, is that you didn’t get the results you expect,” Dr. Kennedy said. “You start asking questions about why didn’t I get what I thought?”

“At the heart of science are questions,” he said, “not facts.”

I love breakfast. There’s something so cosy and comforting about a weekend morning spent grazing on a wide assortment of delicious nosh. Bread, butter, eggs, cheese, cured meats (don’t forget the black pudding!) – many of life’s most soul-nourishing foods are best suited to the breakfast table. Add a cup of coffee and a newspaper and that’s my idea of heaven. 

I’m unashamedly a brekkie fanatic. The first thing I think about when I wake up is food; I can’t function as a normal human being until there’s at least some form of sustenance in my stomach. And until recently, like everybody else, I assumed filling up first thing was the healthiest way to live – admittedly, not with many of the items I’ve just described. It seems I may be wrong. 

Yesterday, research was published in the British Medical Journal that goes against the grain of most mainstream breakfast thinking. According to scientists at Monash University in Melbourne, people who eat breakfast consume significantly more calories than those who don’t. That’s obvious, you might think – but in the long term, more calories leads to, you guessed it, putting on weight. 

There has been plenty of research suggesting a big morning meal can boost your metabolism and keep you off sugary, fatty snacks later on in the day. Just 18 months ago, a study over over 50,000 adults found that one possible solution to weight loss was making breakfast the largest meal of the day. Similarly, in 2012 a report posited that eating chocolate for breakfast fends off cravings later in the day. I have no doubt this sort of information has been grasped at gleefully to justify all manner of luxurious breakfasts. But science, it seems, is debunking these claims. 

There are, of course, reasons why breakfast is important. Schoolchildren who skip the meal – sadly, all too often, not by choice – find it difficult to concentrate. This is because during sleep the body uses energy reserves to fuel its organs; by the morning, a child’s glycogen stores are depleted, making breakfast vital to providing the fuel needed.

Studies have shown that an early protein hit might help you curb your appetite and stop you overeating throughout the day. Carbs also provide the energy your brain needs to function. 

But for anyone looking to lose weight, a hearty breakfast is best avoided, it seems. In fact, the whole ‘breakfast is good for you’ cliché seems to be largely industry driven. In this latest study, the authors wrote: "While breakfast has been advocated as the most important meal of the day in the media since 1917, there is a paucity of evidence to support breakfast consumption as a strategy to achieve weight loss." 

Indeed, media campaigns and scientific studies have long trumpeted the virtues of a big breakfast. The phrase "Breakfast is the most important meal of the day" was coined in 1944 as part of a General Foods marketing campaign to help sell more cereal. The "Go to work on an egg" campaign from the 1950s was a clever marketing wheeze by the Egg Marketing Board. In the 1920s, bacon sales in the US were flagging. Cue some excellent PR (and 5,000 doctors’ signatures encouraging bigger breakfasts). 

In 2017, professor Terence Kealey, author of Breakfast is a Dangerous Meal, told the Telegraph how several studies championing breakfast were backed by food corporations. Not by coincidence, global breakfast cereal sales are predicted to reach $43.2 billion this year, a rise of more than $10 billion since 2012. 

So, should you start your day with a filling meal or on an empty stomach? According to the British Dietetic Association (BDA), the latest study doesn’t reveal anything entirely new, and has both merits and pitfalls. "Whilst some studies do show that people who eat breakfast tend to be a healthier weight, there is no clear benefit of starting to eat breakfast just as a tool to lose weight," says Dr Frankie Phillips, a registered dietitian at the BDA. "The study shows that simply having breakfast isn’t a magic recipe for weight loss for everyone." 

Registered nutrition consultant Charlotte Stirling-Reed agrees: "It all comes back to the individual. If you don’t feel hungry in the morning then fine, just make sure you’re packing some good nutrients into the rest of your day. If you love your brekkie, please don’t give it up to save on a few calories throughout the day."

In fact, both Stirling-Reed and Phillips believe breakfast is one of the best times of day to stock up easily on much-needed nutrients. According to Phillips, "a simple breakfast of wholegrain cereal and milk with a glass of unsweetened fruit juice and a cup of tea provides protein, fibre, a raft of vitamins and minerals and plant phytochemicals." Much better a healthy start than grazing on chocolate muffins at 11am.

Stirling-Reed adds: "It seems likely that those who are eating breakfast may end up eating more calories overall throughout the day, but those calories are likely to come along with the fibre, wholegrains and vitamins and minerals that many of us aren’t getting enough of." Iron and B vitamins, for example, are heavily present in fortified breakfast cereals (though be wary of sugar). 

One method gaining traction in recent years, advocates of which often eschew breakfast all together (and swear by the merits of doing so) is intermittent fasting. Essentially, intermittent fasting entails avoiding breakfast (or dinner), giving the body more time to burn off its fat reserves.

Max Lowery, an Instagram fitness star and founder of 2 Meal Day, firmly agrees that intermittent fasting can help weight loss. "One of the benefits of intermittent fasting is the reduction in calories. It doesn’t actually feel like you’re eating less, because when you do you eat large satisfying meals, but overall you are eating less," Lowery explains. 

There are many versions of intermittent fasting, but Lowery’s involves having two meals a day, skipping either breakfast or dinner. "The goal is to extend your overnight fast," Lowery explains. "Breakfast just means breaking your fast, so I still have breakfast, it’s just much later than the average person." Indeed, a study at the University of Surrey last year concluded that those who ate breakfast later than usual lose more body fat. 

Lowery believes that intermittent fasting can lead to an overall reduction in hunger, improved insulin sensitivity and decreasing inflammation. "When you extend your overnight fast, you essentially allow your body to tap into your fat reserves. It’s a completely normal, natural process, but the modern world doesn’t encourage that to happen." 

He admits it’s not for everyone. Children, as mentioned, need sustenance to concentrate properly at school. Those with a history of eating disorders or pregnant and breastfeeding women should steer clear, while anyone with type 1 or 2 diabetes should get advice from their doctor. 

"Breakfast is actually the most important meal of the day, it’s just you don’t have to have it the first thing in the morning," says Lowery.

This weekend, I’ll endeavour to start my leisurely breakfast a little later (brunch?). Perhaps, in the long term, that’ll help keep me slim. 

U.A.E. Accuses Qatar of Fielding Ineligible Players at Asian Cup

Two days after fans in the United Arab Emirates threw shoes at rival players during a 4-0 loss in the semifinals to Qatar at the Asian Cup, the country’s soccer federation has taken direct aim at the team itself.

Organizers of the Asian Cup said on Thursday that they would respond to an official complaint lodged by Emirates soccer officials, who charged that two members of the Qatari team were ineligible to play in the region’s biggest tournament.

The players — Almoez Ali, a Sudan-born striker, and Bassam al-Rawi, a defender born in Iraq — are fixtures in Qatar’s lineup. Ali is the tournament’s top scorer, with eight goals in six games, and al-Rawi scored the goal that sent Qatar to the quarterfinals.

The complaint is the latest salvo in a bitter dispute between the Gulf neighbors that goes far beyond soccer. The Emirates is part of a two-year-old, Saudi-led blockade of Qatar, driven by a belief that its neighbor is financing terrorism and growing too close to Iran, Saudi Arabia’s biggest regional rival; Qatar has denied playing any role in supporting terrorist groups.

The dispute has already manifested itself in ways small and large in the tournament, which now represents Qatar’s biggest success on the soccer field.

One consequence of the dispute is that there are no direct flights from Doha to Abu Dhabi, so Qatar’s team had to fly through Oman on its way to the event, and Qatari fans — unable to travel to the Emirates without permission — are largely absent at the team’s matches.

But Qatar, which has never qualified for a World Cup but will host the event in 2022, has been the surprise of the field. It will play Japan in the final on Friday.

But even as Qatar marched through the field, rumors — fueled by a close reading of FIFA nationality rules — swirled about the eligibility of Ali and al-Rawi.

The silence of Qatari officials on the issue has only led to more rumors. A spokesman for the team has not responded to repeated requests for comment, while FIFA, the global governing body for soccer, has said the matter falls under the jurisdiction of the tournament organizer, the Asian Football Confederation.

The A.F.C. had said that it would intervene only an official complaint were filed. That complaint arrived in the aftermath of the Emirates’ humiliating defeat in front of its own fans in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday.

“The Asian Football Confederation has a received a protest from the United Arab Emirates F.A. regarding the eligibility of two Qatar players,” the A.F.C. said in a statement on Thursday. “This protest will now be reviewed in line with the A.F.C regulations.”

The A.F.C. declined to identify the possible punishment for Qatar. Teams that have previously fielded ineligible players have forfeited games, but the situation has never come up at the final stages of a major international event.

Under soccer’s regulations, players are only eligible for a national team outside of their country of birth if they have lived there for five continuous years after turning 18. Al-Rawi is 21 and Ali is 22. The rules make an exception that permits players to represent a country if a parent or grandparent was born there; many countries, including the United States, regularly take advantage of the exception.

Qatar has been trawling the world for talent for years in preparation for the 2022 World Cup, embarking on perhaps the most extensive talent identification program in history, one that involved the creation of training programs for youngsters from Africa and an academy for the best prospects in Doha.

Officials in the country have said in the past that the program does not require those scouted to pick Qatar over their birth countries. Though born in Sudan, Ali has lived in Qatar since he was a child. Al-Rawi’s father once represented Iraq internationally.

Still, Qatar’s squads at the youth and senior levels have included several expatriate players, and the eligibility was not questioned when Ali and al-Rawi represented the country at previous tournaments sanctioned by FIFA and the A.F.C.

It was not clear why the Emirates, or any of Qatar’s other opponents — including Saudi Arabia, which lost to Qatar, 2-0 — did not raise the issue until after the semifinal.

The victories over the Saudis and the Emirates were greeted by scenes of jubilation in Qatar, where fans draped in the country’s flag took to the streets of Doha to celebrate the victories.

For the hosts, the defeat was particularly painful given the efforts it had made to create a partisan atmosphere inside Abu Dhabi’s Zayed Sports City Stadium. Local organizers distributed thousands of free tickets to what it described as “loyal” fans before the game.

For the A.F.C, the issue also raises another political issue. Its president, Sheikh Salman bin Ibrahim al-Khalifa of Bahrain, is being challenged for his post by candidates from the Emirates and Qatar.

The organization has opened a separate investigation over the shoe- and bottle-throwing incidents that marred the semifinal. That case could lead to sanctions.

Hoax-Slayers, a website dedicated to highlighting internet scams, was created by Australian Brett Christensen to help consumers spot fake competitions.

Earlier this month, Hoax-Slayer warned of a Butlin's scam, which offered a free holiday via a page called "Butlins Fans", with social media users encouraged to enter a fake giveaway.

The scam tricks users into signing up to the competition by entering their name, home address, email address and phone number.

This then results in the person being targeted for other fake offers and deals using the information.

A recent scam on the bogus Thomas Cook Fans Facebook page targeted Thomas Cook customers.

The hoax was offering a Cyprus Holiday for Two for ten people, with a Photoshopped picture of staff.

A Thomas Cook spokesperson told Sun Online Travel: "We are aware of the recent scam page and have reported it to Facebook to get it removed.

"Our social media team are also advising customers that it is not an official Thomas Cook page.”

The page is no longer available on Facebook.

Other recent scams include free Air New Zealand plane tickets in celebration of their 79th birthday, and fake holidays to Bora Bora on a Majorca Holidays page.

Carnival Cruises, which is also often a victim of fake competition pages, said: "Until Facebook takes steps to restrict these fake pages before they are even created, there is little a brand can do."

Now, travel companies are advising social media users to only use their official pages for competitions to avoid falling victim and for social media sites to remove these pages.

The new attraction will be a permanent feature at the Warner Bros Studio alongside the Great Hall, Forbidden Forest and Diagon Alley.

Social media users were ecstatic at the news, with one commenting: "I need to be transported to London. In my life I have to visit the Tour."

Adult tickets cost £43 with the tour taking approximately three and a half hours.

Guests can book tickets for April 6 to explore the bank

The studio also offers unique experiences throughout the year, such as a Christmas Dinner event in the Great Hall.

Between December 10 and December 12, guests could enjoy an evening of Butterbeer, dancing and a two-course Christmas feast alongside decorations used for the Yule Ball in the films.

This was a special event alongside Hogwarts in the Snow, which ran between November and January where guests could experience the tour with a festive twist.

They also have a Valentines Day dining experience in the Great Hall later this year.

Cashmere, Founder Of Beauty Bakerie

The vegan indie brand, whose fans include Cardi B and Beyoncé, made headlines last year for re-jigging the shade numbers of their Cake Mix Demi-Matte foundation, switching the darkest shade to number one, and the lightest shade to number 59.

When it comes to being your own boss, Cashmere admits ‘I don’t think I was inspired by anyone when it came to launching my own brand, but being a teen mum, I wanted to show my daughter that dreams are achievable if you work hard enough.’

Before Beauty Bakerie launched in 2011 and became a $5 million company, Cashmere was actually working as a nurse, ‘being an entrepreneur is something I’ve always wanted to do and it wasn’t easy, but if you love something you won’t be able to stay away’. Being a one-woman show may seem daunting, especially when it comes to getting started, ‘Women are so powerful when we all stand together, seeing some women being harmful to one another, like men sometimes treat us, makes me realise they don’t understand that women are leading the way in this industry’.

Tata Harper

Her namesake beauty brand launched in 2010 and has since crowned her the Queen of all things green. ‘My Stepfather being diagnosed with cancer really made me examine everything that was going into my body and I couldn’t find a brand that was 100% natural, non-toxic and non-artificial, so I decided to create it,’ Tata Harper explains. Since then, the ingredients in her game-changing skincare are home grown on her own farm.

Harper admits that, initially, she was laughed at for wanting to create natural products that actually worked on your skin, ‘I proved people wrong but I do feel a degree of ignorance is key for an entrepreneur, if you knew everything, you might not want to take that first step’. Besides her unlimited stock of products, the CEO admits her biggest asset is ‘the fact that I’m my own customer. Being a woman, we’re more connected to what we want and what resonates with us, so it makes the business intuitive.’

Jo Malone, Founder Of Jo Loves

The perfume legend has over 20 years experience in the business. After defeating breast cancer at the age of 38, Malone came back and launched her second brand in 2011, Jo Loves. ‘I don’t really know any other way than to be my own boss,’ Jo admits. ‘My first job was working in my family’s flower business, so I didn’t have any preconceived ideas of what a business should be like.’

Having received an MBE, Malone was awarded a CBE last year, celebrating British creativity. Talking on the beauty industry, Jo believes there is no time like the present when it comes to creating a business. ‘There are so many great British beauty brands around, many of them owned by women. Right now is the moment of the entrepreneur.’

Anna Ayers, Co-Founder Of Rahua

Created by Anna Ayers and her husband, hairstylist Fabian Lliguin, Rahua‘s line of all-natural haircare products are inspired by the women that live in the Amazon rainforest. ‘After meeting these ladies, I was inspired by their love for their family and community and how they work to protect the rainforest,’ says Anna.

‘I’ve always been a creative person, so starting my own business became the perfect place to express that. I wanted to bring something to life that would help others, whilst benefiting the rainforest’. Her advice for anyone thinking of starting their own brand? ‘You have to be relentless and always remember, you attract respect by respecting others.’

Nets Beat the Bulls for a 9th Straight Win at Home

D’Angelo Russell scored 30 points, Shabazz Napier had 24 off the bench, and the Nets beat the Chicago Bulls, 122-117, on Tuesday night for their ninth straight win at home.

Rondae Hollis-Jefferson had 18 points and Joe Harris scored 17 for the Nets, who matched their win total from last season (28) in only their 52nd game. They have won 13 of their last 14 at Barclays Center and seven of eight over all.

After a loss at Boston on Monday night, the Nets started slowly against the Bulls, shooting just 8 for 29 from the field in the first quarter.

The Nets trailed by 54-50 at halftime, but they turned it around after Russell made three straight baskets during a one-minute stretch that bridged the end of the third quarter and the start of the fourth.

Zach Levine had 26 points and Jabari Parker added 22 points and 9 rebounds for the Bulls, who have lost four straight and 10 of 11. Lauri Markkanen had 18 points and a career-high 19 rebounds.
